Rock4theKids

Contest Rules

Rock4theKids is a charity fund raising event for SickKids Foundation, which raises money for The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Toronto, Ontario where players compete in Harmonix’s Rock Band™ for fame, prizes and the adoration of a cheering crowd.  Details and rules are below.

Who Can Enter?

Anyone can enter, though players must enter as a band of four players, complete with a band name.

Entry fee for the competition is a minimum donation of $200, though donations and pledges of higher amounts are encouraged and will affect your score (see Prizes). Donations can be made online at the SickKids Foundation website or via our Register/Donate page.  You must submit your entry fee/donation to confirm your entry into the contest.

Register via our online form with the following information:

- Name of band
- Names, telephone numbers and email addresses of members

Bands may optionally include a band logo, to be displayed while the band plays and on your custom made backstage passes!

How Does it Work?

On-site registration for the tournament begins at 6pm at Revival. Please be on time, as there is a limit to the number of bands, and there will be standby bands.  Bands who have not registered 30 minutes before the tournament starts will be bumped.  There will be free play before the tournament begins to warm up.

The band’s entry fee is a donation of $200 or more to SickKids Foundation. Bonus points are awarded based on the size of donation, so raise as much as you can! Everyone that enters or attends gets a raffle ticket ($5 value) for door prizes at the end of the event.

There is a 15 band limit to pre-registration. All bands after 15 will be placed on a standby waiting list and will be able to play, time permitting.

Each band will play one song from our song catalog.  (Includes all Rock Band 2™ songs and most songs from Rock Band™, with some downloadable content).  See the complete song list here.  The top 3 teams will compete in a one-song playoff round in front of a celebrity panel of judges.

Scoring – Round One

Each player in the band receives points in the following four categories.  Scores for all four players are added up for the band’s total score.

  • Performance Percentage: Up to 50 points. (50% of the total score)
  • Stage Presence: Players are rated by 3 separate judges on a scale from 1 to 5.  Maximum 15 points. (30% of the total score)
  • Skill Level: Easy = 0 points, Medium = 0 points, Hard = 2 points, Expert = 5 points (5% of the total score)
  • Song Difficulty: Song difficulty is determined by the song’s “band” tier defined in the game, not the instrument tier. See http://www.rockband.com/music/songs for ratings. Tier 5 and 6 songs are both worth 5 points. (5% of the total score)
  • Star Value: After the song is complete, you receive one point for each “star” awarded by the game for the band’s performance. Gold star performances count as 5 stars. (5% of the total score)
  • Fundraising Bonus: Bands will receive a bonus from 1 to 5 points based on the funds raised for the event. The top 3 fund raisers will receive 5 bonus points, the next 3 will receive 4 bonus points, and so on down the line. (5% of the total score)

Maximum total score:  100 points per member = 400 points [(50 + 30 + 5 + 5 + 5 + 5) x 4]

Scoring – Round Two / Playoffs

After round one, the top three bands will compete in a one song playoff.  Each band must choose a new song and perform it for our judging panel.

Judges will rate each band’s performances based on stage presence, player skill, and audience reaction.  It’s not about who hits the most notes — it’s who rocks the house!

Additional Rules

  • Players must use the instruments provided at the venue (drummers may use their own sticks, if desired).
  • There must be four players to a band. No singing and playing an instrument at the same time, (even though it is very impressive).
  • Vocalists must sing the words of the song — no humming or purposeful distortion of the lyrics.
  • Drummers may not use the ABXY buttons to play.
  • Bands must be ready to play within two minutes of being called or will forfeit.
  • No Fail Mode will be on.
  • All players will use the default game characters to play. (customization would be nice, but too time consuming)
